1. KATO PANGRATION

The athletes of pancratium aim at the victory from the opponents’ banning or at gathering a number of  wins of points. What is permitted is the opponent’s body grabbing, throwings, stranglings and disclocations. Permitted are also pain pressings at exact points. What is permitted is the “ram embolism” as push (not as hit) and the pushes on the body.

2.  PALAISTRA

Blue circle of 10 m. diametre. At one metre far from the outer region there is a white circle. In the centre there is a circle of 3 m. For the local championships the wrestling place may be of another shape.

3. ATHLETES’ HYGIENE AND DRESSING

They must be clean, with cut nails, tied hair, clear-dry clothes and not wearing jewelery. They are dressed(endyma) in blue breeches, the  WHITE athlete has a white short tunic and the BLUE one a blue short tunic. Metalic-plastic or other things which may cause injuring to the opponent, are forbidden according to the chief judge’s discretion. The announcement only may provide for another dressing ( short breeches and close- fitting short  tunic) according to the kind of championship (national, tournament e.t.c.).

The athletes may bear a protective cover on the area of the genitals inside the short tunic, if it is not made of a material which may injure the opponent or himself. The women wear a flannel shirt under the short tunic. If they bear “iron covers”on the teeth, they may bear protective cover on them, too.  Other protective wear is also permitted if there is a medical problem , according to the  authorized for the games doctor’s opinion , so that there won’t be any benefit against the opponent party. Any evident disease of the skin , found out by the chief judge of the games , is followed up by the doctor. A medical report may be presented stating that the skin disease is not infectious or harmfull for the others. The doctor is the only authorized person to judge if the athlete can take part in the game or not.

            4.   HELLANODIKES(REFEREES)-SECRETARIAT

a. For every game there is a chief hellanodikis- Referee at the  place-palaistra moving into the  place-palaistra and two chief judges of the region , sitting antidiametrically , out of the place-palaistra.

b. Secretariat: 1. General Inspector , 2. Hellanodikis of the Points’  Place-Palaistra. 3. Time keeper of the games. 4. Secretary making a list of the games- carrying out the games – Announcer. 5. Coach, 6.  Operator of Games’Electronic List (in case this is available).

c.If the personnel is not enough, one only General Inspector  may be employed for 2  palaistras and 3 Coaches for 2  places-palaistras.

d. Secretariat and timekeepers are appointed by the Board for Chief judges Appointment.

e. In case that a different make-up  of Chief Judges is considered necessary, this will take place by means of a report in the announcement of the games.

5.  SCORES

The athletes are given points only for going from the Upper to the Lower Pangration. As excellently skillful throw is determined whatever technique  applied by the athlete with result for the defended athlete to be found  on the ground with the back, the sides or the chest first of all. Criteria are the dynamism, the pace and the control.

a. Throw, fully carried out from aspect of technique, with result for the attaquer to be found at site of control by the defended ( side control, landing etc.)  is given 3 points.

b. Throw, fully carried out from aspect of technique, out of the defended player’s control is given 2 points.

c. Any other throw is given 1 point.

d.Throw having as result for the defended player to be brought to the ground on the knees is not given any point.

e.Jump over the opponent, which is not completed as technique of prohibition or overthrow and finishes at standby condition, is punished with 1 point.

f. The opponent’s pull for transition from the Upper to the Lower Pancratium, is punished with 1 point.

g. Throw or effective technique at the moment of the end, is considered valid. Whatever technique after the end of the time may lead to penalty.

h. If there is not any contact during the transition from the Upper to the Lower Pangration, the Chief Judge of the Palaistra stops the game and places the  athletes at their first place. If one and/ or both the  athletes evidently avoid the throw, then the punishment of “ forbidden behavior of non fighting spirit “ is imposed.

i. The ram embolism and the pushes do not give any points. They are only acceptable as methods for resulting in disengagement from fighting-palaisma and not as hits.

The Lower Pangration starts when one athlete is seated, lying down and or when both are with both the knees on the ground.

j. Every fit of permissible dislocation and strangling is carried out in normal course and control. Not with shaking for avoiding any injuring. In a different way, the violator may be punished.

IN PARTICULAR FOR THE CATEGORY OF CHILDREN – YOUNG GIRLS (-15 years old): The first prohibition is given 4 points by the chief helanodiki of the palaistra, while one athlete’s second prohibition appoints his opponent as winner.

The points of Win and Penalties are given by the Chief hellanodiki of the palaistra stretching out the rod , as follows :

1 point: Towards the ground , in front of his knee, saying “ONE POINT”.

2 points: Horizontally , at his shoulder’s level, saying : “TWO POINTS”.

3 points: Vertically upwards, saying “ THREE POINTS”

4 points: Vertically upwards, saying “ FOUR POINTS” (it concerns only the class of children – 15 years old).

The difference of the followed procedure when he confers a Victory point from punishment or effective technique is as follows : In case of punishment, before the Victory point is given, he mentions the kind of punishment. The points of victory are given by the Palaistra's Hellanodikes, stretching out the flag, as follows :

1 point: Towards the ground, in front of his knee.

2 points: Horizontally, at his shoulder’s level.

3 points: Vertically upwards.

For the record of a Point, at least 2 Hellanodikes must agree. It may be noticed a short difference of time as regards with the Hellanodikes' reaction on giving the Points.(If the space of time is reasonable this is considered by the Chief Hellanodikis of the points’ palaistras). If the of the Hellanodikes region agree on the athlete to whom a point is given, but they disagree with the number of points, the lower sign is registered.

The Chief  Hellanodikis of the palaistra of points may claim for the interruption of the game from the Chief Hellanonodikis of the palaistras requesting for being given explanations who, then, may apply to the Hellanodikes region .

                                    6. CRITERIA FOR A DECISION

a. If the athlete forbids, the opponent is the winner. The banning is declared by upward stretching of the forefinger or the hand or by a repeated knock in the suplex or in any part of the body by hands or feet, even by a yell of pain. ATTENTION: IN THE CATEGORY OF CHILDREN- YOUNG GIRLS any second banning makes a winner known.

b. The  athlete with the most points at the end of the game, is declared as winner.

c. If there is an equal number of votes at the end of the game and after the end of the extra time, the Chief Hellanodikis of the palaisra and the Hellanidikes of palaistra are called to judge by lifting up the rod or the flag having the colour of the winner respectively. The winner is judged on basis of his capability, attacking and his whole attitude during the game (checking the opponent on the ground, efforts for carrying out techniques of breaking up or putting down etc.).

7. FORBIDDEN CONDUCT – PENALTIES

The forbidden conducts are divided in 3 categories according to the offence, the intention and the result :

  1. A.    FORBIDDEN ACTION

They have as result an extent of punishment unless the Chief Judge of the Wrestling Place always in agreement with at least one of the two Hellanodikes of the Region,  judges that the Forbidden action is made intentionally and may give a double penalty.

a.That it causes injuring ,evident or not.

b.Pain pressing on the vertebral column, neck, nose, throat, head, face, genitals.

c.Grabbing skin

d.Intentional exit from the palaistra. Exit, in case of Upper Pangration: If one foot is absolutely out of the palaistra. In case of Lower Pangration : If the p athlete’s body is more than 50% out of the palaistra. After an exit, in case of Lower Pangration , the Chief Hellanodikis says “IMMOVABLE” and take the athletes in the centre of the palaistra. When he is unable to place them exactly in their location between them, they place them standing up in the centre of the palaistra.

e.Pretence of injuring.

f. Use of compresses ( e.g.gauzes) or protective means, without the approval from the doctor of the games.

g. Unsporting manners or intentional actions of the team or the delegation, causing harm to the validity of the games. The coaches gesturing, shouting and getting up from their seat or ridiculing the games. The  athlete may be punished for the above mentioned cases. The decent guidance in low tones is permitted.

h. Intentional anti-athletic behavior from the defended athlete against the opponent, following technique of prohibition. The Chief Hellanodikis of the palaistra may intervene, without  interrupting the game, so that the attaquer’s advantage won’t be lost or may interrupt the game and give victory to the attaquer.

                        B. FORBIDDEN ATTITUDE OF NON FIGHTING SPIRIT

Causes an extent of punishment .

a.Continuous retreats impeding the normal course of the game or the athletes’ involvement in Upper Pangartion. Then, the Chief Hellanodikis of the palaistra says : “COMPETE”. In case of non obedience or the athletes do not obey, then, within a reasonable period, the Chief Hellanodikis of the palaistra proceeds in reading out the punishment.

b. In case that the two athletes are found in the Lower Pangartion and one of them takes back the game in the Upper Pangartion, he will be punished with “forbidden behavior of non fighting spirit” and the Chief Hellanodikis of palaistra will bring them back to the Lower Pangration in their previous post.

c. In simultaneous restraints both the athletes may be punished for securing the course of the game. In case that the simultaneous restraint continues, the chief Hellanodikis interrupts the game and brings the athletes back to the Upper Pangartion.

The punishments of A and B category are offset and all the 4 punishments cause the offender’s disqualification.

                      C. FORBIDDEN ACTION FOR IMMEDIATE DISQUALIFICATION

For the enforcement of punishment on immediate disqualification at least 2 of the three Hellanodikes must agree. An immediate disqualification is caused by the following actions:

a.Twisting together the joint of knee and ankle.

b.Twisting together or distortion of fingers.

c.Carrying out all the kinds of blows on any part of the opponent’s body.

d.Overstretching or locking of vertebral column (techniques of “guillotine” type)

ic. Unproper attitude or forbidden act from the team or members of team or representation etc. may cause the offender’s disqualification or exclusion, as well as of all his supporting agents.

Id.Intention for injuring  the opponent party.

In the Upper Pangration the punishments are announced by the Chief Judge of the wrestling place after it is said “BE DISCHARGED” and placing the athletes at the initial position. In the Lower Pangartion the punishments are announced after it is said “ IMMOVABLE”.

An EXPULSION (apompompi) is effected in case of an action causing damage to the prestige of the Sport. The expulsion may be a cancellation from the organization or the next continuous organizations and a deletion from the force of WPAF (after a decision by the authorized agents), regardless of who caused it ( athlete of Pangration, coach, factor, sports supporters etc.).

            8. ABANDONMENT – ACCIDENT- INJURING- WIN” AKONITI” (WITHOUT GAME-DUST)

a. An abandonment is declared if the Pancratium athlete is unable to continue or comes out of the game, even if he/she is given an order by the Chief Hellanodikis.

b. The coach has the right to declare Abandonment or Prohibition, throwing a white or blue cloth , respectively ,on the suplex, saying “Abandonment or Prohibition”.

c. If the athletes  are injured at the same time or an old injury causes them  problem and they cannot participate in the game, winner is the athlete having the most points. If the result is of the same score , the Chief Hellanodikis of the palaistra in association  with the Hellanodikes of the palaistra of points decides on the winner, unless the game is final, when the decision is made by the majority of 3 Hellanodikes. An athlete who was injured and considered by the doctor as unable to participate in a game does not continue to participate in a next game.

If an athlete is injured, the Chief Hellanodikis of the palaistra interrupts the game and calls the doctor. After a diagnosis is given within two minutes (the time is taken by the second stopwatch found in the Secretariat), stating that he can participate in the game, the final decision for the continuation of the game is made by the Chief Hellanodikis of the palaistra, in association with the Hellanodikes of the palaistra. This decision cannot be different from that one given by the doctor, if the latter instructs the termination of the game, because of serious injuring. If it is thought as necessary by the doctor, for the athlete to move away from the palaistra, it is imperative for him to be accompanied by a chief Hellanodikis, within the above mentioned period.

An athlete who is excluded because of injury, may be considered as winner if it is considered that the exclusion is result from the opponent. In case that he loses consciousness or feels dizzy, regardless of the result of the game, he is excluded from the rest part of organization.

If the doctor needs assistance, the Chief Hellanodikis of the palaistra is kept informed about the approval for the entrance of an assistant  in the palaistra On no occasion an approval of entrance is given to the coach of the  athlete in the palaistra.

d. A Win so-called “Akoniti” ( without a game and dust) is given to an athlete who does not appear in the game, after he is called 3 times from the Secretariat, within one minute. The Chief Hellanodikis of the palaistra says “BLUE or WHITE ABSENT” indicating by rod the empty place. Then, in token of conferment of win he says “WHITE or BLUE WINNER”.
